I definitely saw this hack on Pinterest and it didn’t disappoint. I threw all of their toys, towels, WHATEVER, in this bag and gave it a good shake and was able to leave a majority of the sand AT the beach. Similarly to the blanket, I wasn’t worried about this getting lost or messed up so it was another thing I didn’t have to stress about. This blanket folds up SO small, is waterproof and sand-proof, and comes with stakes to secure the corners in the sand. We saw a LOT of Pinterest strategies on the beach (fitted sheet with stuff securing the corners, towels, fancier tent contraptions, etc), but this was my favorite. It was so cheap that I didn’t feel like I needed to watch it with hawk eyes to make sure it didn’t get taken or messed up. It was also comfortable and big enough that all of the adults opted to not even worry about beach chairs because we could just sit on this. For that reason, we didn’t bring a sun shade and just used hats and sunscreen as needed. However, with kiddos if the temperature is going to be over 80 or you plan to be at the beach longer than an hour or two, I would definitely recommend looking into some shade options to prevent the burns and grumps. For the Mom: I have FINALLY found my favorite combination for momming around water: your favorite supportive bikini (read: water bra and panties, haha), a long sleeve rash guard (so you don’t have to find someone to help you with sunscreen on your back - the worst), and these swim shorts that have biker shorts underneath (no accidental flashing or weird water wing hips). I was SO comfortable in these on the beach and at the pool. For the Kids: We are all about the long sleeve rash guards in our family! I have bought them at Walmart, Target, and Amazon but haven’t noticed a huge difference. My one thing I would have done differently is to get a more water-safe color for my son. The first came about an hour into the trip when my phone fell out of my back pocket and into the Pacific Ocean…never to return. Yep. Oops. In that moment (and the rest of the trip when I had a replacement phone I was even more protective of), I wish I would’ve had some sort of waterproof bag to store stuff I didn’t want sand or water to get to. (Maybe just for fun?) - Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Series) by Rebecca Yarros This book is like if you put Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Divergent, and How to Train Your Dragon all into a pot and threw a little spice in it. Yarros does a great job of incorporating world building where it is easy to follow and digestible (read: you don’t have to continually flip to the map at the front of the book). This was the first fantasy book in a long time that hasn’t felt cringy to me (minus a few explicit scenes, but you can skip over those if you prefer). Top tier enemies-to-lovers romance with great character building. Lotsss of pages but a fairly quick read. One thing to note, as of writing this, she has only released the first 2 of this 5 book series so if you don’t like cliffhangers, you may want to wait until she completes the series in a few years. Cautions: Explicit language and spice as well as violence, so please read trigger warnings prior to reading. This friends-to-lovers/fake-dating novel has everything we love in a good rom-com novel: swoony main male character, relatable female protagonist, lovable side characters, and a believable enough plot. I fully recommend this one. This book is SO good for educators, women, people that know women… you know, everyone. “A paradigm-shifting study of neurodivergent women—those with ADHD, autism, synesthesia, high sensitivity, and sensory processing disorder—exploring why these traits are overlooked in women and how society benefits from allowing their unique strengths to flourish.” (Amazon summary) I’m telling you, this book was so eye-opening for me as I relate to students, myself, loved ones, and women around me. The author is a Harvard and Berkeley-educated writer, entrepreneur, and mother, who discusses how she was shocked to discover that her “symptoms”-- only ever labeled as anxiety -- were considered autistic and ADHD. Being a journalist, she dove into the research and uncovered neurodiversity— a framework that moves away from pathologizing “abnormal” versus “normal” brains and instead recognizes the vast diversity of our mental makeups. Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.” (Amazon summary) Oh man, I am a wimp when it comes to mysteries and get scared verrry easily so this was the perfect amount of suspense without making me feel the need to sleep with the lights on. This book is riddled with riddles and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time (with some love triangles and interesting characters mixed in). This is the first of a 3 book series. As you can imagine from the title, it has all of the great rom-com-movie-magic moments and is just the sweetest of stories. (Maybe just for fun?) - Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams Another rom-com?? How’d that sneak in here? Ok, this may have been one of my favorite reads in 2023 and I started it without even realizing it was the 2nd book in a series (ha). So… hear me out. I liked this one better than the first in the series (“When in Rome”), but feel free to read the 1st one first if you’re a purist with that kind of thing :) Anywayyy, this book has so many tropes well done: Teach Me to Date, Opposites Attract, Hint of Fake Dating, Bodyguard-ish, Small Town (read: Gilmore Girls vibe). Main male character was a dreamboat who could *actually* communicate (praise hands for no real miscommunication issues). The female main character was SO relatable. I connected to her life story of being underestimated and put into a box. The banter was so fun and I couldn’t put the book down. Cautions: The majority of the book is fade-to-black with the exception of the epilogue which is very much NOT fade to black (read: explicit), so skip that if you don’t like reading that type of scene. The lead up to the fade-to-black is still fairly steamy, so consider that. Beyond this sweatshirt, @TheRealLifeBookReviewer has been one of my favorite non-teacher finds for 2023. She reviews books (primarily romance, my favorite) and gives short reviews, spice/explicit levels, and then ways to modify the book if you want to avoid explicit scenes. As someone who frequently recommends books to others, I love having this resource to preview and offer suggestions. Hands-free, easy access, lightweight - a dream bag. This is the one I am currently using and it is the perfect size for keys, cards, phone, chapstick, and airpods. This brand also has some slightly larger versions if you need a little more room and plenty of color options to suit every style. It is perrrfect for school to keep my phone and valuables on me, especially when leaving the room for lunch or recess. I have found that I like this style more than my more traditional fanny pack option because when I wear it crossbody (my preferred way), this style doesn’t make everything fall out like the fanny pack did. Not only does it have a slim profile, but it is magnetic (duh) so you can fold it over to take with you and/or minimize the amount of counter space it takes up based on what you need.
